Your dishwasher offers modern day convenience, saving you time in the kitchen. A dishwasher that works well cleans dishes effectively and saves energy, reducing your energy bills. We share our expert dishwasher tips for superior performance and savings.
Choosing the right dishwasher
Selecting an energy-efficient dishwasher is the first step toward optimising performance. Look for models with high Energy Star ratings, which indicates the energy efficiency of your dishwasher. A high rating will reduce energy use, save you money and help to reduce emissions.
Our top tips for loading your dishwasher:
Even the best dishwashers won’t deliver results if they are not loaded the right way.
- Avoid overloading
- Arrange plates and bowls with dirty surfaces facing the center of the dishwasher
- Place glasses and cups at an angle to prevent water from pooling
- Alternate forks, knives, and spoons in the utensil basket to prevent them from sticking together and ensure they all get clean.
- Place pots, pans and large dishes on the bottom rack for better water and detergent access.
- Ensure that nothing blocks the spray arms from rotating freely.
- Load plates and bowls in the bottom rack with their dirty sides facing the centre for optimal cleaning.
- Load small items like mugs, glasses, and small bowls on the top rack to avoid blocking the water spray from reaching other dishes.
- Make sure dishes and utensils don’t nest together, as this prevents effective cleaning.
- Place silverware with handles down in the utensil basket, except for knives which should have handles up for safety.
- Ensure there is enough space between all items for water to circulate freely
Water temperature and detergent usage
Using the correct water temperature and detergent will help you acheive the best cleaning results.
Water temperature
Most dishwashers perform best with hot water. Set your water heater to a temperature around 50°C for optimal cleaning.
Dishwasher tips for detergent usage
Choose detergents formulated for automatic dishwashers. Follow manufacturer recommendations for the right amount for your model.
Powder detergents are generally more effective in removing tough stains. We recommend Aktivo Ultra Concentrate Dishwasher Powder. It contains enzymes for fast elimination of food grime and tough stains.
Gel detergents dissolve quickly and are easy to use. These are ideal for short cycles and may not be as effective against heavy grime and stuck on food.
Detergent pods offer convenience and usually combine detergent, rinse aid and cleaning agents all in the one pod.
Take advantage of energy saving features
Understanding and using your dishwasher’s settings correctly can lead to better performance and energy savings. Here are some tips:
Eco Mode (Energy-Saving Mode): Uses less water and energy by extending the wash cycle, making it ideal for lightly soiled dishes.
Half-Load Option: Allows you to wash a smaller load using less water and energy, typically by only activating one rack.
Delay Start: Lets you run the dishwasher during off-peak energy hours, reducing electricity costs.
Air Dry Option: If your dishwasher has an air-dry setting, use it instead of the heat dry option to reduce energy consumption. Alternatively, open the dishwasher door slightly after the cycle ends to let dishes air dry naturally.
Avoid pre-rinsing
No need to waste your time pre-rinsing dishes. According to the experts at Finish, pre-rinsing dirty dishes can be an unnecessary use of water and can waste up to 65L of water per wash load. Dishwashers are designed to handy dirty dishes. Scrape large food particles into the bin and let your dishwasher do the hard work.
Regular maintenance is key
Regular maintenance keeps your dishwasher running longer, with greater efficiency.
Clean the filter: The filter traps food particles and debris, preventing them from clogging the spray arms. Clean the filter regularly to ensure proper water flow and prevent unpleasant odours.
Inspect spray arms: Check the spray arms for clogs and debris. Use a toothpick or a small brush to clear any blockages in the nozzles.
Check the seals: Inspect the door seals for cracks or damage. A worn-out seal will need replacing as it can cause water leaks, reducing the efficiency of your dishwasher.
Run a cleaning cycle: Once a month, run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or a cup of white vinegar. This helps remove buildup of grease, limescale, and detergent residue, keeping your dishwasher in top condition.
Soften water in hard water areas with Aktivo Softener Salt. This will keep your machine working at peak efficiency and effectively remove water marks and streaks on your dishes.
Examine the Drain: Keep the drain free of food particles and debris to maintain water circulation and maximise cleaning power.
Use these dishwasher tips for cleaner dishes, prolonged machine lifespan, and long-term savings.
