Everything you need to know about fridge water filters

It’s easy to take today’s modern conveniences for granted. You grab a glass, place it under your fridge dispenser and watch as crystal-clear water flows, while ice gently clinks in the glass. Behind every refreshing sip is an unsung hero: your fridge water filter! Regularly replacing your fridge’s water filter isn’t just another chore—it’s the key to ensuring your water stays free from contaminants, tastes fresh, and keeps your family healthy. In this blog, we’ll cover everything you need to know about fridge water filters. With our easy tips, you’ll never have to second guess when to replace them or how to install them. What is the purpose of a fridge water filter? A fridge water filter improves the water and ice quality by removing impurities, chemicals, bacteria, and heavy metals. How does a fridge filter work? Typically, fridge water filters use a two-step process by using activated carbon and fine mesh (sediment filter) to remove impurities. Step 1: Sediment filtration This initial step captures larger particles like dirt, rust and sediment, so your water is free of any debris. Step 2: Carbon filtration The water then passes through an activated carbon filter. This removes and reduces chlorine taste and odour, as well as other chemical contaminants like lead, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The activated carbon effectively absorbs these impurities. How often should you replace your water filter? Over time, fridge water filters become less effective at removing impurities. It is recommended that your fridge water filter is replaced every six months but this can vary depending on a few factors: Hard water may require more frequent changes Larger households using the water and ice dispenser more frequently may need to replace their filter soon Look out for signs that your filter needs replacing (even if it hasn’t reached its expected lifespan) Filter indicator light comes on Water flow is slower than normal Water appears cloudy or discoloured Visible sediment in water or ice There is a funny taste or unpleasant odour Why is it important to change your fridge filter? Improves water quality The job of your water filter is to remove impurities, such as chlorine, sediment, and other contaminants, from your drinking water. Over time, these build up in the filter, reducing its effectiveness and potentially affecting water quality. Prevent bacterial growth As the filter becomes clogged, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria, which could contaminate your water supply. By changing the filter regularly, you can help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Increase appliance lifespan A dirty or clogged filter can strain your refrigerator’s water dispenser, making it work harder and shortening its lifespan. Regularly changing the filter helps extend the life of your appliance. Compatibility: Ensuring the right fit for your refrigerator model Prior to replacing your fridge water filter, ensure compatibility and fit with your refrigerator model: Check the manual: Your refrigerator’s user manual will specify the filter type. Inspect the existing filter: Look for the model number printed on the filter. Manufacturer recommendations: Use filters recommended by your fridge’s manufacturer for the best results. Ask the experts: Reach out to the Statewide team for guidance on the right filter to suit your fridge. How to replace your fridge filter Replacing your filter is generally a quick and easy process. Installation steps: Turn off the water supply to the refrigerator. Remove the old filter by twisting it counterclockwise (or following the instructions for your model). Insert the new filter, ensuring it’s properly aligned. Turn the filter clockwise until it locks in place. Turn the water supply back on and check for leaks. Run water through the dispenser for a few minutes to flush the new filter and remove air. This process may vary slightly based on the make and model of your refrigerator. We have a range of handy guides for your brand of filter to help you with installation: LG fridge water filter Fisher & Paykel fridge water filter Samsung fridge water filter If in doubt, check the instructions on your fridge user manual or refer to the manufacturer. Troubleshooting common issues Leaks around the fridge filter Check the filter is securely installed Inspect O-rings and seals are in good condition and correctly aligned Reduced water flow Check for clogs or kinks in the water line Flush the filter thoroughly FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions Can I use a generic fridge filter instead of a brand-specific one? It is always recommended to use genuine fridge water filters that are designed to fit your brand/model fridge perfectly. Third party and non-genuine filters may not fit correctly and may cause damage not covered under the manufacturer’s warranty. If you opt for a non-genuine filter, make sure its compatible with your refrigerator model and approved by a reputable water testing authority. Why is my change filter indicator light still on after installing my replacement filter? Changing your fridge water filter does not automatically reset the indicator light. Typically, there will be a reset button that will need to be pressed for around 3 seconds after the filter installation. It is best to refer to your user manual for specific instructions. Why is my water cloudy and full of sediment after installing a new fridge water filter? Cloudy water and sediment after installing a new filter are usually the result of air bubbles or residual particles from the filter. This is normal! It typically clears up after running a few glasses of water to flush out any debris and air. I just changed my fridge water filter and the water tastes strange. Why? Since refrigerator water filters are made of carbon, some residue may initially be present and cause an odd, bitter taste. We recommend running the dispenser and discarding the first three litres of water. What happens if I don’t replace the filter on time? Over time, an old filter can become clogged, reducing water flow and allowing harmful contaminants to bypass the filtration system. This can increase the risk of bacteria growth, compromising water quality. It also forces your fridge to work harder, raising energy costs and putting strain on the appliance. How can I tell if my fridge has an internal or external water filter? To determine if your fridge has an internal or external water filter, check the user manual or look inside the fridge. An internal filter is usually located behind a panel inside the fridge or at the base of the appliance. An external filter is typically mounted on the back or outside the fridge. Some of the fridge filters are NSF certified. What does this mean? NSF certification is a process in which water filters are rigorously tested to meet the National Sanitation Foundation’s (NSF) standards. This certification provides independent verification that the filter has been evaluated and proven to effectively reduce contaminants from your drinking water. Do fridge water filters have an expiry date? No. Unused filters have an unlimited shelf life if they are kept dry. Take advantage of our multi buy discount and save on your filters. How to easily replace your fridge door seal

A refrigerator door seal, plays a crucial role in maintaining the efficiency and temperature of your fridge. Over time, door seals can wear out, leading to air leaks and increased energy consumption. Fortunately, fixing a refrigerator door seal is a quick and easy task that you can tackle on your own. In this guide, we will show you how to easily replace your fridge door seal. What does a fridge door seal do? A fridge door seal, also known as a gasket, is a flexible strip made of rubber or a similar material that is attached to the edge of a refrigerator door. Its main function is to create an airtight seal between the refrigerator compartment and the external environment when the door is closed. In addition, a fridge door seal: Prevents air leaks and maintains consistent temperatures, reducing energy consumption and lowering electricity bills. Controls condensation by stopping warm, humid air from entering the fridge. This in turn prevents moisture build-up and the growth of mould and mildew. Helps with noise reduction. A seal acts as a barrier, absorbing vibrations and reducing the noise generated by the refrigerator’s compressor and fan. Creates an airtight seal, keeping external contaminants and odours out, ensuring proper food storage conditions. Provides efficient cooling. With a good door seal, the refrigerator’s cooling system operates optimally, without the need to work harder due to air leaks, resulting in longer-lasting and more efficient performance. How do you know when a fridge door seal needs replacing? There are a few signs that can indicate your fridge door seal may need replacing. Here’s what to look out for: Visible damage such as cracks or tears. Inspect the seal visually for any visible signs of wear and tear. If you notice significant damage, it’s likely time for a replacement. Cold air escaping from the sides or corners of the closed door. A faulty seal may allow warm, humid air to enter the refrigerator, resulting in moisture build-up or condensation inside. If you notice excessive condensation on the walls or shelves, or if you find water droplets inside the fridge, it could be an indication that the door seal is compromised. Difficulty in fully closing the refrigerator door or it pops open slightly. A deteriorating door seal can create an environment for mould or mildew growth. If you notice any signs of mould or mildew on or around the door seal, it could indicate that the seal is not properly sealing and should be replaced. A faulty door seal can lead to increased energy consumption. If you notice a sudden increase in your refrigerator’s energy usage or if your energy bills have been higher than usual, it’s worth checking the condition of the door seal. Replacing your fridge door seal You will need: Replacement refrigerator door seal. Check your refrigerator’s manual or look for a model number to ensure you buy the right seal for your fridge. Find yours here Screwdriver and pliers Soft cloth Mild detergent and sponge Safety first!  Before you get started, make sure you disconnect your refrigerator from the power source. Replacing your fridge door seal Step 1:  Remove the old door seal If your fridge seal is attached to the door with screws: Locate the screws holding the seal in place. They are typically found on the inner side of the door. Use your screwdriver to loosen and remove these screws. Slowly peel off the old seal from the refrigerator door. Take care not to damage the door surface or any other components. If your fridge door seal is held in place by adhesive: Gently peel it off from the door surface. Be careful not to damage the door or any surrounding parts. If there is any remaining adhesive residue, you can use a mild adhesive remover or rubbing alcohol to clean it off. If your fridge door seal clips into a channel around the door: Simply pull the seal away gently by hand. Step 2:  Clean the door surface Use a soft damp cloth and detergent to thoroughly clean the area where the old seal was attached. Ensure that the surface is free from any residue, dirt, or grease. Wipe it dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Step 3:  Prepare your new door seal Unpack the new door seal and lay it flat. Allow it to sit at room temperature for a while to help remove any creases or folds. Step 4:  Install the new door seal Starting from one corner, align the new seal along the edge of the refrigerator door. Press it firmly into place. Continue attaching the seal, carefully working your way around the door, making sure it is properly aligned and fully adhered. Step 5:  Secure the new door seal Once the seal is attached all the way around, reinsert the screws (if applicable) that were removed in Step 1. Tighten them securely but avoid overtightening, as it may damage the seal or the door. Step 6:  Lightly clean Wipe off any excess adhesive or residue with a soft damp cloth. Ensure the area around the seal is clean and dry. Step 7:  Reconnect the refrigerator Reconnect your refrigerator to the power supply. Step 8:  Test the door seal Close the refrigerator door and check for proper sealing. The door should close smoothly without any gaps or leaks. To test the seal, try sliding a sheet of paper or a dollar bill between the door and the refrigerator. If the paper can be easily pulled out, the seal may need adjustment or further tightening. That’s it! You’ve successfully replaced the door seal on your refrigerator. How to troubleshoot and fix a refrigerator light that has stopped working

We are all familiar with our refrigerator light that turns on as soon as we open the fridge door.  At some point, we may find that the light has not turned on.  While this doesn’t affect how our fridge functions, it may be tricky to find items in our fridge (especially when we are looking for a late-night snack). The most likely solution is burnt-out globe that needs replacing. If that doesn’t fix the problem, there are several other things to check. We show you how to troubleshoot and fix a refrigerator light that has stopped working. Check your refrigerator light globe The easiest thing to do is check the light globe. Remove the light bulb cover, then remove the globe by turning it counter-clockwise. When an incandescent globe burns out, the filament inside the globe breaks into pieces. Give the globe a gentle shake to hear the sound of a broken filament. If the globe has burnt out, you will need to buy a replacement. Replacing your refrigerator light globe Replacing your refrigerator light globe can be done quickly and easily. First disconnect your refrigerator from the power source. Next remove the fridge bulb cover. Remove your old globe by unscrewing it. Place your new globe in the socket and replace the bulb cover, before securing into place. Lastly plug your fridge back in and open and close the fridge door to check that the light comes on. Check out our blog guide: How to easily replace a refrigerator light globe Handy tip: Find your replacement fridge globe at Statewide Appliances Spares. To find the correct globe for your fridge you will first need to your fridge model number. Check the door switch The next thing to check is the door switch. The door switch activates your fridge light. When the door is closed, the switch is depressed and the fridge light goes off. The switch is a small triangular shaped plunger switch. To test your fridge door switch: Open your fridge door Locate and press the switch, then release it to see if the light activates Over time, a build-up of dust and grime can cause the door switch to malfunction. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth If the light still does not switch on, you may need to replace your door switch. Check the power cord Check the power cord to make sure it is not unplugged. If it is unplugged, plug it back in and check to see if the light is now working. Investigate your circuit breaker Check your circuit breaker and reset if it has tripped. Inspect the refrigerator light socket A damaged light socket can prevent the globe from working. If you have a multimeter, it is a good idea to check to see if the electrical socket is getting power. A defective light socket will need to be replaced. How to deep clean your refrigerator

November 15th is National Clean Out Your Fridge Day! With the busy holiday season coming up, this is a good time to tackle your refrigerator. Your refrigerator will need to handle extra demands as you get ready to stock extra groceries and store leftovers. We share our top tips and show you how to deep clean your refrigerator. Deep cleaning your refrigerator will remove unpleasant odours and help it run more efficiently. If your fridge is dirty or cluttered it will cause your appliance to work extra hard in order to keep all its contents cold. This can result in a rise in your energy bill. How often should you give your refrigerator a clean? Wiping the interior and exterior of your refrigerator should be part of your weekly cleaning routine. When a mess happens in your fridge, clean it immediately to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria. A more thorough, deep clean should be done at the start of each season. You will need: Dishwashing detergent Sponge Baking soda Microfibre or soft cloth Handy hint: Before you start, unplug the fridge. This will allow your glass and plastic shelves to come down to room temperature so that they can be easily removed, without the risk of cracking. Start by removing all contents Place perishables such as meat and dairy in a refrigerated cooler bag with ice to keep them cool. Check use by dates and ditch any expired products. Ditch any questionable left overs. Remove all fridge shelves, drawers and door inserts Give them a good soak in warm, soapy water (a laundry tub will be handy for this task). Then wash thoroughly with a sponge and detergent. Rinse well and allow to dry. Clean the refrigerator interior Using a solution of 1 part baking soda to 7 parts water, create a paste and apply to the interior of your fridge before wiping with a microfibre or soft cloth. To prevent this, keep these handy tips in mind: Keep your freezer door closed as much as possible Cool your food before freezing Use airtight containers or resealable bags that have had all air removed Wrap food in aluminium foil or plastic wrap for an added amount of protection from moisture loss Label everything Freezing will preserve your food for longer but it still has a shelf life. Label everything and include the date you put in the freezer. Slice your bread before you freeze it Portion sliced bread in a resealable bag before you freeze it. Slices can be easily and quickly toasted while frozen. Divide your freezer into zones Create a foolproof system to keep your frozen goods organised. This could be as simple as designating areas for all your meats or putting the most often consumed goods to the front. As a general guide: Meat, poultry and fish should be stored on the bottom shelf Vegetables, chips, soups and sauces in the middle shelf Ice-cream, desserts, frozen fruit on the top shelf Cook double Cooking double batches and freezing for another day is a great way to save time. Avoid placing glass bottles in the freezer A quick chill is ok, but if you leave it in the freezer too long, they may crack or explode, which can cause damage or even physical harm. You can do this by dispensing some water. How to install an internal filter Step 1: Internal filters are usually located in the rear of your refrigerator, in the top right corner. You may need to remove your shelf to easily access your filter cover. Once you have located your filter cover, pull the tab at the bottom of the cover towards you to release. Step 2: Hold the base of the filter firmly and pull towards you. Then rotate the filter counter clockwise to release it from the filter head. Step 3: Pull out the filter. Note that a small amount of water may drip after you remove the filter. This is normal. Step 4: Get your replacement filter and remove from the packaging. Align the filter correctly and insert the filter into the filter head. Turn the filter clockwise 90°. Step 5: Push the entire filter back into the bracket. Then push the cover up and click into place. Step 7: Finally dispense some water from your water dispenser to flush your filter. Step 8: Once your fridge water filter is installed, you can once again enjoy fresh, clean drinking water. Buy your Fisher & Paykel fridge water filters from Statewide Appliance Spares. Refrigerator not cooling? Try our easy troubleshooting tips

If you find your refrigerator is not cooling effectively, there are a number of steps to diagnose and fix it. Before you call out your refrigerator repairer, give our easy troubleshooting tips a try. Safety first! Always switch off the power if you are investigating internal components of your fridge. Check the power It may seem simple but a power cord that has come loose or a tripped circuit breaker can shut down your fridge in an instant. Open your fridge door and if the light is still on, your power is intact. Is the light off? Make sure your power cord is plugged in firmly. If that doesn’t do the trick, check your circuit breaker and flick the switch back on if required. Don't overload your fridge Keep your fridge well stocked but do not overload it. Your fridge needs proper air circulation to work best. Overloading your fridge will block the airflow. Likewise, a refrigerator with not enough items can also fail to function efficiently. Stack your fridge accordingly and ensure items are clear from vents. Check out our blog guide for handy organising tips. Check your vents Sometimes food and items may be blocking your vents, causing obstruction. In turn, cold air will be unable to circulate through your fridge. Try re-organising your fridge to ensure airflow is not restricted. Set your thermostat temperature control to the right range To keep perishable foods safe, set your temperature to an optimal range.  The Australian Standard for fridges uses a fresh food compartment average temperature of 3°C. Your freezer should be set close to -18°C.  Temperature controls (also known as thermostats) can be easily bumped by food items. Exterior digital controls can easily be changed by inquisitive little fingers! (It is a good idea to lock the settings to prevent this from happening). Reset the temperature to the correct range. Check your fridge door seal The seal (also called a gasket) around your refrigerator or freezer door seals cold air in. This ensures your food stays fresh and maintains safe temperatures. Be sure to wipe down the seal regularly with warm soapy water and a sponge. You can also give it a light scrub using an old toothbrush before wiping down with a damp cloth. Regularly check your seal for any signs of wear and tear or damage. A defective seal will allow cool air from the fridge to escape. Replacing a door seal is simple. You can find the right fridge door seal for your fridge here. Clean your condenser coils Clean your condenser coils (located underneath or behind your refrigerator). The life span and performance of your fridge can be impacted by coils that are clogged with debris and dust. To clean your coils, first unplug the fridge from the power source. Using a vacuum with a narrow attachment, vacuum any dust from around the coils. Its a good idea to do this once or twice a year to keep your fridge cooling properly. Make sure the fridge is level When your fridge is level, you are able to shut and seal the doors properly. To check your fridge is level, grab a spirit level and test the top of the fridge. You can then make slight adjustments to the feet of your fridge until the bubble on your spirit level is centred. Have you tried our troubleshooting tips and are still experiencing issues? Call in a refrigerator repairer to professionally diagnose your problem. There could be a bigger issue that requires attention, such as a coolant leak or faulty compressor. Need fridge spare parts?
