Check and fix unresponsive buttons
- Ensure no buttons are stuck in a pressed position. Gently press or wiggle unresponsive buttons to help dislodge any debris or reset the button mechanism.
- Clean your remote. Dust and debris can hinder button responsiveness, so give your remote a gentle clean. Dampen a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol and gently clean around buttons, removing any dirt or residue.

Ensure your remote is paired correctly with the device
Pairing a remote control with your TV can depend on the brand and model of the TV and remote control. Below are general steps to follow. Check your user manual for more detailed instructions.
- For infrared (IR) remote controls check for a dedicated pairing button labelled as Pair, Link or Connect. First, press and hold the pairing button on the remote control until you see a confirmation light or message on the remote. This may take a few seconds as the remote is trying to establish a connection with the TV. The TV may display a message or show a light indicating that it’s ready to pair. Once paired, ensure the TV is functioning properly by testing the remote buttons.
- If you have a Bluetooth remote control, ensure that the TV’s Bluetooth feature is turned on. This is usually found in the TV settings menu. Put remote in pairing mode. This usually requires a button or combination of buttons as shown in your user manual. On the TV, go to the Bluetooth settings and scan for available devices. The remote control should appear in the list. Select the remote control from the list of available devices on the TV and choose the option to pair or connect. After pairing, test the remote to ensure it is working correctly.
Peform a power reset
- Unplug the TV power cord for 60 seconds (or 2 minutes for Android TVs) and plug it back in.
- Alternatively, for Android TVs, perform a reset by holding down the power button on the remote control for 5 seconds.
- Perform a TV software update.
Perform a factory reset
- For Android TVs: Be aware that a factory reset erases all your TV’s data and settings, returning it to its state at the time of purchase.
- For non-Android TVs: This procedure resets the video calibration settings of the TV.
Practical tips to preserve battery life
Maximise your remote’s battery life with these practical tips:
- Turn off the remote control backlight.
- Opt for high-quality alkaline batteries for longer life.
- Remove batteries if you are not planning on use it for an extended period.
How to change the batteries
Step 1: Locate the battery compartment and open it carefully.
Step 2: Remove old batteries.
Step 3: Insert the new batteries in the correct orientation.
Remote control – Do’s and Don’ts
Do:
- Handle with clean hands: Grease and dirt can damage your remote.
- Clean regularly: Dust and crumbs are not your remote’s best friends. Just give your remote a gentle wipe with a microfibre cloth.
- Store in a safe place: Remote controls have a knack for disappearing. Designate a special spot for it to avoid frantic searches.
Don’t:
- Spill liquid on your remote: Liquids and electronics don’t mix well!
- Expose your remote control to extreme temperatures: Extreme temperatures and humidity can harm electronics
- Use sharp objects to press buttons: This can damage the buttons and internal components.
Is it time to replace your remote control?
If all the troubleshooting fixes fail to resolve the issue, then it might be time to replace your remote control.
To find the right remote control for your TV you will first need your model number.
- Look for the model number on the back or underside of the remote control. It may be printed on a sticker or engraved into the plastic.
- Check the battery compartment of the remote control. Some remotes have the model number printed inside the battery compartment.
- Consult the user manual that came with the remote control. The model number should be listed in the specifications or on the cover of the manual.
- If you don’t have the user manual, try searching for the brand and model of your remote control online. You may be able to find a digital copy of the manual that includes the model number.
- If all else fails, contact the team at Statewide Appliance Spares and we will help you identify the model number and find a replacement remote control.
