How to easily replace a refrigerator light globe

December 4, 2022 | Fridges & Freezers

Your fridge light is an essential item in your refrigerator. It helps you to identify items and store them in your fridge easily. Replacing a refrigerator light globe (or bulb) is an easy maintenance task that can be done in minutes. We show you how to easily replace a refrigerator light globe.

You will need:

  • Screwdriver
  • Replacement globe. You can buy yours here

To find the right refrigerator light globe for your fridge:

A normal globe is not suitable for your refrigerator as it will be exposed to moisture, temperature changes and usage cycles. You will need to replace your light globe with one that is designed to withstand this environment.  The shape and size need to be the same as the one you have removed for a correct fit.

To find the correct globe for your fridge, you will need your refrigerator model number.

  • If unsure where to find your model number, check out our guide. Most manufacturers will place the model number inside the refrigerator or freezer, on either of the side walls. You may also find it behind the crisper or on either side of the refrigerator.
  • To find the correct globe, search on our website

What types of light globes can be used in a refrigerator?

The typical globe for your fridge is an incandescent globe and are typically 40 watt. LED bulbs are a good choice for a fridge as they can handle the cold temperatures and are energy efficient.

Safety first! Before you get started, make sure you disconnect your refrigerator from the power source.

How to replace your refrigerator light globe

Step 1: Locate the fridge bulb cover

Your fridge light is located in the centre or front centre of the top of your fridge. To access the old light globe, you will need to remove the fridge bulb cover. Some can be opened by depressing a plastic locking tab. Others may have a mounting screw in place which will need to be removed.

Step 2: Remove the old light globe

Carefully unscrew the old globe and remove it from the housing.

Step 3: Install the new light globe

Unpack your new light globe and place in the socket. Turn clockwise, to screw into place. Replace the bulb cover and secure into place.

Step 4: Test your light

With your light globe now installed, you are ready to test your new fridge light. Plug in the refrigerator. Next, open and close the fridge door to check that the light comes on.
