How to descale your washing machine: Step 1: First, remove all clothes, detergent, and softener from your machine before you start. Step 2: Prepare the descaling solution.  Follow the instructions on your descaling product to create the solution. Step 3: Pour the solution into your machine's detergent compartment (front loader) or directly into the drum (top loader) Step 4: Set your washing machine to run on the hottest cycle available and let it run on its full cycle. This will help dissolve and flush out any built-up limescale and other residues. Step 5: After the descaling cycle is complete, use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe down the interior surfaces of the washing machine. Using natural ingredients for descaling Tackle the task of descaling your washing machine with natural ingredients. Here’s what you need to know: Vinegar White vinegar is an effective cleaner that can tackle everything from mineral build-up to mildew. To use vinegar for washing machine descaling, simply add two cups of vinegar to your washing machine and run it through a cycle on hot water. Troubleshooting common issues Leaks around the fridge filter Check the filter is securely installed Inspect O-rings and seals are in good condition and correctly aligned Reduced water flow Check for clogs or kinks in the water line Flush the filter thoroughly FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions Can I use a generic fridge filter instead of a brand-specific one? It is always recommended to use genuine fridge water filters that are designed to fit your brand/model fridge perfectly. Third party and non-genuine filters may not fit correctly and may cause damage not covered under the manufacturer’s warranty. If you opt for a non-genuine filter, make sure its compatible with your refrigerator model and approved by a reputable water testing authority. Why is my change filter indicator light still on after installing my replacement filter? Changing your fridge water filter does not automatically reset the indicator light. Typically, there will be a reset button that will need to be pressed for around 3 seconds after the filter installation. It is best to refer to your user manual for specific instructions. Why is my water cloudy and full of sediment after installing a new fridge water filter? Cloudy water and sediment after installing a new filter are usually the result of air bubbles or residual particles from the filter. This is normal! It typically clears up after running a few glasses of water to flush out any debris and air. I just changed my fridge water filter and the water tastes strange. Why? Since refrigerator water filters are made of carbon, some residue may initially be present and cause an odd, bitter taste. We recommend running the dispenser and discarding the first three litres of water. What happens if I don’t replace the filter on time? Over time, an old filter can become clogged, reducing water flow and allowing harmful contaminants to bypass the filtration system. This can increase the risk of bacteria growth, compromising water quality. It also forces your fridge to work harder, raising energy costs and putting strain on the appliance. How can I tell if my fridge has an internal or external water filter? To determine if your fridge has an internal or external water filter, check the user manual or look inside the fridge. An internal filter is usually located behind a panel inside the fridge or at the base of the appliance. An external filter is typically mounted on the back or outside the fridge. Some of the fridge filters are NSF certified. What does this mean? NSF certification is a process in which water filters are rigorously tested to meet the National Sanitation Foundation’s (NSF) standards. This certification provides independent verification that the filter has been evaluated and proven to effectively reduce contaminants from your drinking water. If it’s a gas BBQ, disconnect the gas supply and move it to a stable surface away from flammable materials. Step 1: Preheat for easy cleaning Turn on the grill for 15 minutes to loosen debris, making it easier to clean. Step 2: Scrub the grates Use a wire grill brush to remove food and residue from the grates. Step 3: Soak stubborn grime Soak the grates in warm soapy water, then scrub them again. Dry thoroughly and lightly oil to prevent rust. Step 4: Clean the drip tray Remove and wipe down the drip tray to eliminate grease build-up. Step 5: Interior care Using a  BBQ scraper, scrape away grease and fat. For stubborn grease, use a degreaser. Stainless steel exteriors should be cleaned with a non-scratch cleaner like Aktivo Stainless Steel Cooktop Cleaner. Finish by spraying with stainless-steel protectant to keep it looking shiny and protected from the elements. Step 8: Check for gas leaks  Before reconnecting the gas tank, test for leaks by applying soapy water to gas connections. If bubbles form, fix the leak before use. If you don’t have a grill brush, scrunch up a piece of aluminium foil and use it to scrub your BBQ grill. Choose the right brush. For cast iron grills, go for a wire brush with gold-coloured bristles. For stainless steel grills, select a brush with silver-coloured bristles. Avoid covering hotplates with aluminium foil, as it can block airflow and lead to uneven cooking. When not in use, keep your BBQ covered with a weather-resistant cover to shield it from the elements. Don’t use lighter fluid to ignite coals, as it can leave a chemical taste on your food, which is definitely not desirable! Always opt for lighting aids specifically made for BBQs. Soak skewers before grilling.  Wooden skewers can burn easily on the grill, so soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before use. Prevent overheating by using a thermometer to check the grill’s temperature. High temperatures can cause flare-ups and uneven cooking. Let your meat cook properly before flipping it. Safety first! Before beginning any maintenance on your lawnmower, disconnect the spark plug and ensure the throttle is in the off position. This will make the mower safe to work on. Always perform maintenance when the engine is completely cool. Cleaning your lawn mower Dirt, grass clippings, and debris can build up in your lawnmower over time, affecting the performance of your mower and potentially causing blockages. Regular cleaning helps to: Improve mower performance. A clean mower can cut your grass effortlessly and efficiently. Prevent rust and corrosion, improving your mower’s lifespan. Prevent overheating by allowing proper ventilation and reducing the wear and tear to the mower’s motor. Minimise the risk of fire hazards caused by dry grass and debris Steps to clean your lawn mower Grass clippings tend to stick to the underside of the mower deck. Use a garden hose or brush to remove debris, dirt and stubborn caked on grass clippings. Once you clean the underside, remove any clippings or grass from the blades. Note: Dirt ridden foam filters can be washed in warm soapy water before drying completely and reinstalling. Paper filters need to be replaced with a new one. Step 3: Replace the air filter Remove the old filter and install the new one, paying attention to the arrow that indicates fuel flow direction. Fuel filter maintenance Step 1: Find the fuel filter Depending on your mower, the fuel filter can usually be found along the fuel line between the tank and carburettor. Pinch the fuel line with clamps to prevent leakage, then remove the filter by loosening the clamps holding the filter in place. Then gently pull the fuel lines off both sides of the filter. Step 2: Inspect the filter Inspect the filter for any debris, clogs or sign of wear and tear. Step 3: Replace the fuel filter Attach the new fuel filter to the fuel lines, ensuring the arrow on the filter (indicating fuel flow direction) points toward the carburettor. Tighten the clamps around your replacement filter and remove the hose clamps from the fuel line. Spark plug maintenance A faulty or worn spark plug can make your lawnmower difficult to start or lead to engine misfires. Routine spark plug maintenance keeps your mower running smoothly, especially at the start of the Spring season when frequent use is expected. Start by removing the spark plug. Use a spark plug wrench to unscrew the plug. Check for any black carbon deposits or corrosion. If the spark plug is still in decent condition, clean it with a wire brush and some carburettor cleaner. If it looks worn or damaged, it’s best to replace it. Ensure the spark plug gap is correct using a gap tool, as an incorrect gap can result in poor ignition. Lastly, reinstall the spark plug snugly (being careful not to overtighten). Checking your oil and oil filter Just like a car, your lawnmower’s engine needs clean oil to function properly. Old or low oil can cause your engine to seize up or wear out prematurely. Inspect the oil level using the dipstick, before every use. Make sure the oil is at the correct level and not dirty. Inspect your filter Check the oil filter regularly for dirt or clogs. A clean filter ensures proper engine performance. How to change the oil in your mower: Check oil levels by using a dipstick. Low or dirty oil should be addressed straight away. Drain the old oil by placing a container under the mower. Then remove the oil cap or plug and drain the old oil completely. If the airflow is obstructed, some areas might get hotter than others, resulting in uneven cooking results. Make sure there’s enough space around your dishes. Overcrowding can block airflow, so try to leave adequate space between pans and the walls of the oven. Ensure that the vents inside your oven are not obstructed. Lining your racks with alfoil may be great for cleanup but it can sometimes restrict airflow. Hot spots in the oven Ovens can have natural hot spots that can cause your food to cook unevenly. To combat hot spots, try rotating your dishes halfway through the cooking time. This helps ensure that all parts of the dish are exposed to similar temperatures. Handy hint! An easy way to check for hotspots is to test it with bread. Preheat your oven and place a few slices of bread on the rack. Monitor to see if some pieces are more cooked than others. Poor oven insulation The oven door seal (or gasket) ensures that heat stays inside the oven. A damaged or worn-out seal can cause heat to escape, leading to uneven cooking temperatures and poor energy efficiency. You will need to replace a worn or damaged oven door seal. Inspect the oven door seal for any signs of wear and tear. The door seal needs to be intact and must form a tight seal when the door is closed. Replace your seal easily with our handy guide. Handy hint! A simple way to test the seal is to close a piece of paper in the oven door; if it pulls out easily, the seal may need replacement. Opening the door too often Opening the door frequently while baking can cause hot air to escape and significant drops in temperature which can lead to uneven cooking. Instead of opening the door frequently, keep your oven light on and check the progress of your food through the window. Incorrect rack placement The position of the racks can affect how evenly your food cooks. For even heat distribution, leave enough space between the racks to allow hot air to circulate freely. Recipes often suggest placing dishes on specific racks for optimal results: Place the racks in the middle positions for most standard baking and roasting recipes.
