Fridge cleaning tips that work

March 23, 2021 | Fridges & Freezers

A sparkling clean refrigerator is the key to increasing the lifespan of your fridge and keeping your food fresh for longer. Tackle the task of cleaning your fridge with our proven fridge cleaning tips that work.  All you need is a few basic cleaning supplies; a little elbow grease and you are ready for a good fridge clear out and deep clean.

What you will need:

Start by emptying out your fridge

A handy tip is to plan your deep fridge cleaning before the weekly shop. That way, there will be less items to remove. Before you start, place perishables such as dairy and meat in a refrigerated cooler bag with ice. This will keep them cool.  Grab your garbage bag and bin any food or condiments that have passed their expiry date. Wipe down the exterior of jars and bottles to remove any sticky drips.

Remove refrigerator shelves and drawers

Hand wash all removable refrigerator shelves and drawers with warm water and dishwashing detergent. Prior to washing, it is a good idea to let any glass components warm to room temperature. This helps to avoid any shattering when in contact with warm water. Once clean, rinse and allow to air dry completely. Now is a good time to soak any empty storage containers in a sink filled with dishwashing soap and warm water.

Tackle the interior

Using a non-scratch sponge and a solution of 1 part baking soda to 6 parts water, wipe down the interior, paying attention to grooves on the side of the fridge, crevices and hinges. You may need an old toothbrush or cotton bud to tackle small, hard-to-get-to spots.  You can also use a food safe cleaner such as Aktivo Fridge Cleaner & Deodoriser – an effective all in one spray that cleans, deodorises and sanitises.

Once clean, dry the inside of the fridge thoroughly using paper towels or a soft microfibre cloth.

Check your fridge door seal

Take the time to do a quick check of your fridge door seal. The seal around your refrigerator seals cold air in, so that your food stays fresh and at a safe temperature. Wipe down the seal with warm soapy water and a sponge. Inspect the seal for any signs of damage or wear and tear. A defective fridge door seal can easily be replaced. You can find the right fridge door seal for your fridge here.

Change your fridge water filter

If your refrigerator has a water or ice dispenser, be sure to change your water filter regularly to reduce common contaminants like iron, particulates, lead and mercury. A clean filter means better tasting water, without any unpleasant odours or nasties. Replace your fridge water filter every 6 months (or when the indicator light comes on). Find out more in our handy guide.

Give your condenser coils a thorough clean

The life span and performance of your fridge can be impacted by coils that are clogged with debris and dust. To clean your condenser coils, first unplug the fridge from the power source. Using a vacuum with a narrow attachment, vacuum any dust from around the coils.

Clean the exterior

Use a microfibre cloth to buff the exterior of your fridge and eliminate streaks, fingerprints and any marks. For refrigerators with a stainless-steel finish, use a stainless steel polish  to repel dirt and dust and give a long-lasting shine.

Replace your shelves and drawers

Your fridge is now sparkling clean. Next step is to replace your shelves and drawers. Maximise space in your fridge by carefully placing your adjustable shelves. Return all food, drinks and condiments to the refrigerator.

Take some time to organise your fridge

Save time and find what you need easier, with a well organised fridge.

  • Store milk at the back of the bottom shelf where it is the coldest
  • Keep eggs in their original cartons and store in the top or middle shelves where temperature remains most consistent
  • Use the fridge door to store condiments, butter, cheeses and juices
  • Keep children’s snacks at an easy reach for them
  • Use a Lazy Susan or turntable to access frequently used items
  • Label containers and group like items together
  • Save space with can and water bottle dispensers. You can easily stack drinks, while providing easy access
  • Store fruit and vegetables in your fridge crisper drawers
  • Keep herbs fresh longer by placing a bunch in a jar filled with water. Cover loosely with a plastic bag and store in the middle shelf of the fridge
  • Track leftovers by putting an ‘eat by’ date on the container and storing at the front of the shelf

Lastly, don’t overload your fridge. Your fridge needs proper air circulation to work. Stack your fridge carefully and ensure items are clear from vents.

Keep it fresh

Keep your fridge smelling fresh with this tried and tested trick for reducing odours. Just store an unopened box of baking soda in your fridge. It will soak up any odours and leave your fridge smelling clean and fresh.

With regular care and maintenance, you can keep your refrigerator clean and running like new.

If your fridge comes equipped with a water and ice dispenser, you will need to change your filter regularly. Changing your fridge water filter is quick and easy. Check out our guides to changing your LG and Samsung water filters.
