Laundry appliance filters – Washing machine
Just like your other home appliances, your washing machine needs care and attention to operate at its best.
Cleaning the washing machine filter is important for several reasons:
- Improved efficiency: A dirty filter can cause the washing machine to work harder, using more energy and water and potentially leading to a shorter lifespan for the machine.
- Better performance: A clogged filter can affect the washing machine’s performance and lead to poor cleaning results.
- Reduced risk of damage: A dirty filter can also cause damage to the washing machine, such as leaks or clogs in the hose or pump.
- Prevention of unpleasant odours: Debris trapped in the filter can start to smell over time, leading to an unpleasant odour in the washing machine and potentially even in the clothes.
How to clean your washing machine filter
Safety first! Always unplug your washing machine from the power source before attempting any repairs or maintenance.
Step 1: Locate your filter
Filters are typically located at the front or the back of the washing machine and may be behind a small door or hatch.
Step 2: Remove your filter
Depending on the washing machine model, the filter may twist or snap out, or it may be held in place by screws that need to be removed. Remove the filter and soak it in hot water with a few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent for 5-10 minutes. This will help to loosen trapped dirt and residue. You may need to give it a light scrub with a soft bristled brush. Thoroughly rinse and allow to dry.
Step 3: Inspect the housing
Inspect the inside of the machine for excess lint or debris. Clean the area where the filter is housed using a small brush and paper towel. You can even use a toothbrush to reach tiny crevices and hard to reach places.
Step 4: Replace your filter
Once the filter is dry, put it back in its place and secure it as it was before removal.
Step 5: Turn the power supply back on
After cleaning and reassembling the filter, turn the power supply back on and run a test cycle to ensure proper functioning.
Note: The specific instructions may vary depending on the washing machine model, so refer to the user manual for specific instructions.

Dryer lint filter
The lint filter is an important part of your dryer. All dryers are equipped with a lint filter, sometimes known as a lint trap. It collects fibres and clothes particles as they tumble dry preventing them from clogging the airflow of your dryer’s vent system. We recommend cleaning your dryer lint filter after every use. Some dryers will have a light with a reminder to check your lint filter.
Why clean your dryer lint filter?
- Improved safety: A clogged lint filter can increase the risk of a dryer fire. Lint and debris can build up in the dryer vent, reducing airflow and potentially causing the dryer to overheat.
- Enhanced performance: A clean lint filter allows air to flow more freely, making the dryer more efficient and reducing drying time.
- Energy saving: When the dryer has to work harder because of a clogged filter, it uses more energy, which can result in higher energy bills.
- Prolonged lifespan: A clean lint filter can extend the life of the dryer, as it prevents the machine from working harder and wearing out more quickly.
- Better-looking clothes: A clean lint filter can help clothes come out of the dryer looking better, as a clogged filter can cause clothes to come out wrinkled or covered in lint.
How to clean your dryer lint filter
Step 1: Locate the lint filter
In most instances, you can find the lint filter in the door opening of the dryer. On some models, the lint screen may be located on the dryer’s back wall. Check your owner’s manual if you are unsure.
Step 2: Remove the lint filter
Depending on the dryer model, the lint filter may simply slide out or be held in place with clips or screws.
Step 3: Clean the lint filter
Roll off excess lint with your fingers. Wet a soft bristled brush with hot water and liquid detergent. Scrub screen to remove residue build-up. Rinse in hot water and allow screen to dry completely.
Step 4: Clean the lint screen cavity
Excess lint often builds up in the cavity where your lint screen is located. To easily remove lint that has accumulated in this space, unplug your dryer and use your vacuum cleaner with a narrow attachment.
Step 5: Reinstall the screen in the dryer
Reinstall the screen and turn the dryer on and run a test cycle to ensure proper functioning.
// We recommend checking and cleaning your dryer lint filter after every load.

General appliance filters – Vacuum cleaner
To ensure that your vacuum cleaner is cleaning efficiently, the vacuum filter and canister needs to be cleaned regularly.
Why should you maintain your vacuum cleaner filter?
- It helps maintain suction power by removing clogged dirt and debris.
- Air quality is improved by trapping particles, preventing them from being released back into the air.
- A clean filter prolongs the life of your vacuum cleaner by reducing strain on the motor.
- It can prevent unpleasant odours from developing inside the vacuum.
- Clean filters can improve the efficiency of the vacuum and reduce energy consumption.
How to clean your washable filter on your vacuum cleaner
Step 1: Locate the filter
This should be easy to access. Check your manufacturer’s instructions if you are unsure where it is located.
Step 2: Remove the filter
Remove the vacuum cleaner filter and tap it against a hard surface to remove excess dust. It is a good idea to do this outdoors or over a bin! You can use a small, soft bristled brush to remove any excess dust.
Step 3. Rinse the filter
Next give the vacuum filter a good rinse under running water. Do not use detergent – cool tap water will do the trick. Leave the filter to air dry for 24-48 hours (or until completely dry).
Step 4: Reinstall the filter
Lastly, once the filter is completely and thoroughly dry, place it back into the vacuum. Your vacuum cleaner is now ready for use.
Some vacuum cleaner filters are not washable and require replacement.
Bagged vacuum cleaners usually come with a replacement filter, which needs to be changed periodically. This can be a HEPA filter, a motor filter, or both. The frequency of replacement depends on several factors such as the type of filter, usage frequency and the amount of dirt and debris being vacuumed. To ensure the best performance and efficiency, it is important to check the manufacturer’s instructions and replace the filters as needed.
